Why Nitric Oxide an Essential in Penile Erectile Function

Nitric Oxide (NO) is the main potent vasodilator ,which is essential for making the blood flow more potent and erection more harder.

Erectile dysfunction is a common male sexual disorder that is associated with aging and a range of systemic diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart problem, and depression, as well as psychosocial behaviours such as smoking, alcoholism, and drug addiction.

According to a study, nitric oxide (NO) is believed to be the main mediator of penile erection due to its vasodilating chemical compound found in NO. The treatment of erectile dysfunction often requires combinations of psychological and medical therapies, many of which have been only moderately successful in the past.

What is Nitric Oxide?

Nitric Oxide  as defined by wikipedia as a free radical that’s  naturally produced in the body to communicate between two molecular cells. NO is a potent  vasodilator substance in the regulation of blood flow, which is essential for better and stronger erection.

According to Jim White, a registered dietitian and American Dietetic Association spokesperson,  “To make nitric oxide, enzymes in the body break down the amino acid, and arginine.”

Nitrate-rich or arginine source is naturally found in vegetables such as spinach, arugula, beetroot, which have shown to increase levels of nitric oxide in the body with a corresponding normalization in blood pressure  in hypertensive persons.

How Erection Works

Penile Erectile Function- mechanism of erection

During erection, corpora cavernosa are filled with blood into the chambers leading to an increase in pressure and the development of hardening of the penis.

When a man stimulated sexually  through visual and sense of touch, the sympathetic stimulation of the penis decreases while the parasympathetic stimulation increases.

The NO then is released in the terminal of the axons of the parasympathetic nerves. The arteries relax and open up to let more blood to flow in; at the same time, the veins close up.

Once blood is in the penis, pressure traps within sinusoids of the corpora cavernosa leading to an increase in pressure and the development of engorgement of the penis. When the inflow of blood stops and the veins open, your penis becomes soft.

Why Nitric Oxide is Essential in Erection Quality (EQ)

In 1992 , nitric oxide was proclaimed “Molecule of the Year” in the field of neuroscience, physiology, and immunology. And in 1998,  three Americans (Robert Furchgott, Lewis Ignarro, and Ferid Murad) won Nobel Prize for medicine  citing NO as a cardiovascular signalling molecule.

NO is the main potent vasodilator released by nerve and endothelial cells in the corpora cavernosa of the penis, which is essential for making the blood flow more potent that’s what makes erection more rigid and firm.

The role of nitric oxide in erection is the activation of  a soluble enzyme called “guanylyl cyclase“, resulting to an increases in cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels. The cGMP causes the smooth muscle to relax, which causes an inflow of blood to the penis which then leads to an erection.

The erectile actions of NO have been demonstrated in human penile tissue samples and in a range of experimental in both vitro and in vivo animal studies.

According to the study, penile erection depends on the release of nitric oxide into the blood. However, NO decreases on lifestyle such as  smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels.
